so picture me.

It’s  almost the start of summer ’94. Right before that. It’s starting to burn.

It’s my 13^th summer - yes I’m not even thirteen - you’re well into recording a beautiful Monster around in the south: Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles, New Orleans; I am in the south too but another coast, Rome, and I get myself my first stereo-system to have a cd player, and as I ask a friend of mine to suggests me something, anything, wanting to buy my first cd, and he goes on telling me about this band. R.E.M., the name.

The next day it must have been even slightly hotter, and I’m buying your Automatic for the People album.

You say: “One, two, one two three four”. It opens my ears and enters. And it all started. And it all let loose, really.. .

Accelerate.

It’s October, the first day of it.

My 27^th summer is just over. Right after that. It’s stopping to hurt.

It’s another hot place, Madrid, and you’ve just come offstage after your first time playing in a bullring. I am backstage and I’m giving you this letter.

My 28^th R.E.M. show is just over too (alright alright fucker, you beat me to it). And I’ve also seen much more, apart from your band, from Bowie to Wonder; from Dylan to Young, from Suicide to Waits, from Björk to Fugazi, from Pere Ubu to Primal Scream, from Rolling Stones to New Order, from The Smashing Pumpkins to The Mars Volta, from Stockhausen to Black Sabbath, from whatever to the hell, and so on and on...

But I never get as young as even younger than twelve as when I see you performing the setlists you write the afternoons before the show, excited like a child. Ike me that afternoon, this night, and still. Only when I see, hear, feel your picks take shape, flesh, live, only then I see like I am at the very same time returning to something almost completely pure (as that afternoon compulsively-ecstatically spent spinning that brand new record on that brand new stereo on my brand new ears and soul and fucking spirit) and even more importantly, really witnessing that it’s still almost all already there. It doesn’t betray. Like a scar that came out of pleasure. And even more greatly: it’s greater. It has grown.

I am too, but I still play your records and Love – listen: Love – the musician, more importantly the human being you are, like that afternoon over there.

I still spin that one record but I now spin thousands different, even you have done a few new tracks since then, in some other sunny studios and les sunny ones. They are all in those new thing that we both like called iPod and that new stereo doesn’t quite spin cd’s anymore.

And I am less innocent.

Less and less with the passing of summers; and falls; and winters; and springs.

But I am more Grateful than ever, to you, today. October/ Spain. It could be anywhere really, I suppose. I will always be Grateful, really, I’m sure.

Tomorrow will be slightly colder naturally, but I’m also pretty sure I’ll play a song.

I don’t have only one record anymore, so maybe not all afternoon, and you might well not give a damn, but I’m pretty sure I’ll play one of yours, Pete.

Thankyou for all of them.

This ain’t no nostalgia, this is an hymn to the present, to both of us and now, and where we’ve reached. Only so far.

Burn every picture now. Play a new song.

With all of my heart. All of it and me.

Just another guy from another southern place with innocence lost and love for rock’n’roll just like you who gets excited about exciting things and hasn’t stopped yet.

è folgorante. letteralmente folgorante


e magnifico
e bellissimo



questo disco è vitale e Vita

è un capolavoro eccome, piazza un colpo dopo l'altro e se al primo pezzo vado boom, al secondo lost completely e al terzo wow mi rimane poco coraggio di sentire gli altri, eppure son fantastici, dicasi fantastici, tutti gli altri

è più determinante, bruciante di Monster o New Adventures, a tratti, a tanti

altro che 'disco simpatico': è un disco rabbioso con sorriso, accelerato, graffia e lascia cicatrice.

34 minuti ed è meglio di ore e ore e giorni e anni. dodici.

black-flip jumps, three-hours shows, memorable memories

Do you recall the back-flip jump?

Cedric used todo that in 2003, at the start of the shows.

he ceased to do it at all in 2005, and for good.
until last night

Last night I witnessed one of the very highest peaks of The Mars Volta live, and having followed the band seeing them a dozen times, and most importantly in quite a long-spanning period from 2003 to 2008, I feel lucky, blessed, honoured to to report they are still moving forward, pushing the boundries of themselves.

now back to the back-flip jump for a moment, it might seem no so meaningful, but given that as far as I know it was the first one in 5 years, it does indeed suggest a glimpse of what state they were in, mentally, spiriturally, artistically and physically yesterday.

they were at the top of their game as they ever were.

e'thing was on fire, I wa already having high hopes 'cause Cedric seemed in better shape then ever talking to him backstage right before him storming on with the rest of the guys, but this surpassed my expectations.

This was the longest set they' ve ever played in their career, story, 3 hours minus 3-4 minutes, a setlist seeing Aberinkula back in and the addition of Miranda (only played at recent new year's eve) and asilos, with electric guitars (omar y pablo).

when Thomas came off to watch the three ex-At The Drive-In friends (ha) playing the 'acoustic numbers' it was quite a moment indeed and we agreed it was special. to say at least.

yes, I had seen this same european tour before this date somewhere else (and I' m gonna see it again before it ends, of course) but yesterday, yesterday it was special.

an almost packed latin country venue bigger than almost all other venues of the european tour almost at its full capacity with only 300 tickets left to be sold (meaning a great success for the band also in this terms) made the rest. or ws part of it all, more like.

as I tend to reiterate, when I speak about The Mars Volta, we are lucky beings to be living at the same time they do, much like were the same people living at the same time as Michelangelo.

best ensemble doing art, doing that human thing, doing anything, anywhere nowadays.

and watch it all flourish, now
